    internships and independent study

    health science

Internship: The purpose of fieldwork is to allow students to earn credit by applying concepts learned in health science classes to the design implementation and evaluation of health education/health promotion projects in community, school and work-site settings. Students identify their own fieldwork site and a UA faculty member will provide guidelines on how to structure the fieldwork experience. In most fieldwork projects, the student will need to keep a journal or log of activities related to the fieldwork experience, and engage in one health promotion or disease prevention project that they design, implement or evaluate. The fieldwork experience can be taken for 1 or 12 semester hours of credit. Some sample fieldwork sites include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • American Cancer Society
    • American Heart Association
    • American Lung Association
    • Local hospital wellness centers
    • County, State, and Regional Health Departments
    • Business Employee Health Departments
    • Local health coalitions

Independent Study: The purpose of the independent study experience is to allow you to explore a health education and health promotion topic in more detail. The experience is designed for you to work with a faculty member to identify readings and related activities to increase your knowledge in a content area of interest. The student selects the topic of interest before contacting faculty. The student and faculty member then work out an agreement of what will constitute the independent study experience. The independent study project can be taken for 1 to 6 semester hours of credit. Several independent study activities have been designed for students.
