Each academic year, to best serve the needs of student organizations looking to deepen and strengthen their community-engaged scholarship, student organizations on campus are invited to apply as an Anchor Organization in the Student Community Engagement Center (SCEC). This year, the SCEC has selected Hands in Health and Eta Sigma Gamma Delta Xi as one of only four Anchor Organizations to be assigned dedicated office and storage space in the SCEC in Capital Hall. As a selected Anchor Organization, Hands in Health and Eta Sigma Gamma Delta Xi will have the opportunity to meet regularly in the SCEC and utilize the space available in Capital Hall. They will work with the SCEC staff to develop an action plan for advancing their community engagement initiatives, annually assess and evaluate the impact of their project and partnership as a whole, as well as encourage individual members to respond to surveys that evaluate the overall impact of the SCEC, host Coffee & Community session(s), and nominate students to participate in the annual SCEC Leadership Academy.

Hands in Health currently has approximately 20 active members and is open to any interested UA student. The purpose of this student organization is to advance the professional competency and dedication of individual members with an interest in health and wellness. Hands in Health provides undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to gain experience in health-related service, teaching, advocacy, and research. Eta Sigma Gamma Delta Xi is the local chapter of the national health education and health promotion honorary society, serves to recognize outstanding health education and promotion undergraduate and graduate students, as well as give members practical experience with health program planning, implementation, and evaluation.  Initiation criteria for the Delta Xi chapter include: major or concentration in health education and health promotion, a minimum GPA (3.0 in the major for undergraduates and 3.2 for graduates), and active participation in her sister organization, Hands in Health. The faculty advisor of Hands in Health and Eta Sigma Gamma Delta Xi is Dr. Jen Nickelson, Associate Professor in the Department of Health Science.

The Athletic Training BSAT program has been selected by the University Assessment Council as the recipient of the 2020 Provost’s Assessment Award.

Established in 2017 by Provost Kevin Whitaker in conjunction with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, the annual award recognizes excellence in academic program-level assessment and improvement of student learning.

The members of the University Assessment Control (UAC) felt that among the three worthy finalists, the Athletic Training BSAT program’s 2018-19 report was most deserving and most strongly exhibited the award criteria: meaningful, measurable, manageable and innovative. In qualitative comments, UAC members complimented basically every aspect of the BSAT assessment report (e.g., the level of clarity/detail; the flow of the narrative; the alignment and variety of measures; the thoughtful triangulation and interpretation of data; and the use of results for targeted improvement of specific competencies).

In a statement from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, the Athletic Training BSAT program was thanked “for your strong commitment to excellence in teaching and learning.”
